Best UK online stockbrokers

The table below compares the dealing charges and other fees of around 20 UK online stockbrokers to help you find the best stockbrokers for trading UK shares, investment trusts and exchange-traded funds.

The cheapest UK online stockbrokers for one-off trades is X-O, at £5.95 per trade with no admin or inactivity fees for either regular share dealing accounts or ISAs. iWeb Share Dealing is even cheaper at £5 per trade, but charges a £100 one-off account opening fee. Other brokers may be cheaper if you plan to trade very frequently.

You can see details of what each column means by placing your mouse pointer over the top row of the table. Further information on each broker’s fees can be seen by placing the pointer over underlined entries in the table. If your browser does not support these pop-ups or you are viewing this on a tablet, you can view all these notes inline at the bottom of this page.

All firms in the table have a UK division that is regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Notes for the UK online stockbrokers comparison table

VAT. Fees include VAT at 20% where applicable. Fee schedules are not always clear whether a charge is exempt, inclusive of VAT or subject to VAT in addition. In theory, dealing commissions, custody fees and stock transfer fees are VAT exempt, while administrative charges are subject to VAT. Unfortunately, different stockbrokers classify functionally similar fees in different ways, so an annual account fee may be called a custody fee (VAT exempt) at one firm and a general admin fee (subject to VAT) at another.

Trade types. Rates shown apply to standard UK online trades only. Trading by telephone, in international stocks or in any other than UK-listed ordinary shares will often mean different charges. For international stock rates, see the UK international stockbrokers table.

Residency. Most UK stockbrokers will not accept non-resident retail investors due to UK money laundering regulations, although it’s always worth checking with the firm in question. Those that have been reported to accept non-residents at least some of the time include TD Direct Investing (both through its overseas resident account and its Luxembourg subsidiary TD Direct Investing International), Charles Stanley and SVS Securities. Interactive Brokers and Saxo Bank (the parent firm of Saxo Capital Markets) will accept clients of most nationalities, but possibly not through their UK offices. See this update on UK stockbrokers for non residents.

Who’s who. The proliferation of white label services (where a trading platform is rebadged under another firm’s name), introducing brokers and rebranding exercises can make it difficult to keep track of which brokers operate which services. These are some of the main brand changes and business relationships involving firms listed in the table.

  1. AJ Bell Youinvest was formerly known as Sippdeal. It rebranded in November 2013, but the service is unchanged.
  2. HB Markets Online and Simply Stockbroking merged to become Beaufort Sharedealing in April 2013, and then rebranded as Beaufort Securities in August 2014.
  3. Charles Stanley Direct was formerly known as Fastrade. It relaunched in early 2013 with a new brand and different fees.
  4. Computershare share dealing is a white label service provided by TD Direct Investing.
  5. Guardian Stockbrokers is an introducing broker to Saxo Capital Markets.
  6. HSBC InvestDirect/InvestDirect Plus and First Direct Sharedealing are both part of the HSBC group, but offer different services and fees. Both require a current account with the relevant bank.
  7. iWeb Share Dealing and Lloyds Bank Share Dealing belong to the same group as Halifax (Lloyds Banking Group) and are the same underlying service with different levels of fees.
  8. Motley Fool Share Dealing is a white label service provided by Interactive Investor.
  9. NatWest Stockbrokers/RBS Sharedealing was a joint venture operated by TD Direct Investing. TD took full control and moved clients over to the TD Direct service in January 2015.
  10. Saga Share Direct is a white label service provided by Selftrade. Like most Saga products, it’s only available to the over 50s.
  11. ShareDeal Active and X-O are both owned and operated by Jarvis Investment Management, but offer different services and fees.
  12. SharePrice is owned and operated by Interactive Investor, with different fees.
  13. Trustnet Direct is a white label service provided by Interactive Investor.
  14. TD Direct Investing was formerly known as TD Waterhouse. It rebranded in November 2011, but the service is unchanged.
